KCYHA UNIFICATION

This webpage is dedicated to keeping parents and players up-to-date on the unification process of the Kansas City Youth Hockey Association (KCYHA). This page will be updated as more information becomes available.

If you have any additional questions, please contact the Jr. Mavs Advisory Board Member, Ben Fortner, at bfortner@outlook.com.

What is the KCYHA?

  • The Kansas City Youth Hockey Association (KCHYA) will serve as the umbrella organization for all of youth hockey in the region and play under one USA Hockey number. KCYHA will serve over the KC Stars, KC Jr Mavs, Carriage Club, Line Creek Saints, Topeka Roadrunners, St. Joseph Griffons, and the KC Storm.

  • KCYHA will house all teams, including what will now be referred to as "club" (formally "house") and "travel" hockey teams and will be run in a cost-efficient manner.

  • KCYHA will also operate the Kansas City Youth Hockey League (KCYHL) which will be responsible for the scheduling of all club team games.

  • The 5-member Executive Board of the KCHYA consists of Mike Curry, Lamar Hunt, Jr, Tom Tilley, Guy Gronberg, and Peter Long

  • The KCYHA is a non-profit entity solely for the benefit of those who want to be involved in the sport of youth hockey

Why is the unification important?

  • Unifying travel teams will make for stronger, more competitive teams across the city (travel, select and house)

  • Unified recruitment efforts to expand the youth hockey market, thus increasing player enrollment.

  • More local tournaments will put Kansas City on the map as a go-to-place for youth hockey

  • Better skills development with clinics and camps throughout the year

  • New rinks will be built around the metro area to support the anticipated growth of youth hockey

How will these changes affect me?

  • All “club” teams will keep their existing names and logos and continue to operate out of their existing rinks.

  • The house league will become districted similar to other hockey markets. However, no one will be asked to leave a playing/practice scenario they are currently comfortable with.

  • All travel hockey under the auspices of the Kansas City Youth Hockey Association (KCYHA) will operate under the brand of the “KC Mavs” with full support from the Missouri Mavericks, the Premier “AA” franchise member of East Coast Hockey League (ECHL).

  • New website will comprehensively support the individual identity of each club and will be your full service source for: Online Player Registration, Team Pages, Player Rosters/Profiles, Calendar/Schedule, League Management with Stats/Standings, Live Scoring, Email messaging, Mirror Content, and IT Support.

  • The Tier I Mavs Elite program will be removed after the 2014-15 season. The intentions is to bring it back sometime in the future when it can be developed as a more competitive program, made mainly of local talent. For now, KCYHA can work with Tier 1 programs in Omaha and St. Louis to place any kids who are legitimate prospects and give them the best chance to be seen by scouts.
