WELCOME TO THE COACHES CORNER

2014-2015 Hockey Season!!

Thank you for volunteering your time to coach with the Jr Mavs Youth Hockey Organization.  Volunteers are the foundation of our organization and there wouldn’t be an organization without people like you.  Our goal here is simple; teach the participants not only the game of hockey, but more importantly, teach them life lessons they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.  The coaching philosophy is pretty straightforward… we are here to teach life skills and hockey skills.  Coaching has a powerful impact on our children, which is why it is important that we set extremely high standards towards leadership, fair play, accountability and teamwork, all while keeping it fun and entertaining for the participants.  After all, enjoying an activity is the key to unlocking extra effort.

Coaches become a very important figure in the lives of a hockey player.  Coaches need to understand and honor the relationships made with their players and take advantage of the opportunity to become a positive role model.  After the player’s parents, the coach is generally the next closing individual in a child’s life.  Because of this, every coach should take their role seriously.  The outcome of a successful season is not measured by the wins and loses column… its measured by the developing passion the player has to the sport of hockey.    If the player loves the sport, he is going to want to get better.  Coaches can help develop this passion.  We are not focused on creating the next NHLer, we are focused on creating ‘hockey players for life’.

Please take a moment to read the Coaches handbook in its entirety.  The information in this handbook is meant to be a valuable resource to help you stay productive and focused throughout the season. The information comes from various USA Hockey members who helped shape the way the game is being played today.   It will offer insight in regards to the responsibilities of the coach as well as discuss the importance of communication and organization.  It will also include guidelines to running effective practices and give helpful tips about game management so your players and parents can know what to expect.

As our organization continues to grow, we will continue to provide the best hockey experience for our players and parents.  As coaches, we need to strive to be the best.  The players and parents are relying on you.  Our own Missouri Mavericks are proud to be associated with our youth hockey program and we in turn our proud to call ourselves Jr Mavs!
